A portrait&#38;nbsp; of the 102-year-old DJ and legendary pioneer of drag shows in London, Jo Purvis. Purvis, who was named by QX Magazine as a “living legend of the gay scene” talks about her life and career.
Directors Statement
Being asked to make this film was such a gift and I just jumped at the opportunity. Spending time with Jo at the incredible Nightingale Hammerson in Clapham where she lives, really gave me an insight into the dynamics of the gay and lesbian scene from the 1960s onwards.

Jo is a self confessed ‘night owl’ and so conversations were late night. It was as if we were having a ‘ciggy’ in the corner of the club, two Jews having a camp natter, replete with Yiddish and Polari!
With this film I wanted to make a portrait of Jo at 102. It was also essential to use some archive footage that I found on DVD in her room and capture something of the past eras she inhabited and so I decided to shoot on 8mm film.

The film asks what it’s like to look back on a life in clubs (alongside her day job at British Airways!). It also attests to Jo’s sprit and life force at this moment in 2024.

This film really was a collaboration between Jo and I hope in a small way that it contributes to the important history of queer life in London and gets seen widely.

There was of course so much that didn’t make it in and I am hoping that the interview I did with Jo will be housed in at the Bishopsgate Institute Archive.&#38;nbsp;
Jo Purvis passed away at 104 in Feburary 2026.

Maps of Other Possibilities, 2025A film about the work and archive of the Bow Gamelan Ensemble

	Made in collaboration with the original members (Anne Bean and Richard Wilson) this is an experimental documentary which delves into the archive of Bow Gamelan Ensemble (1983-1993). It creates new collisions of past and present through an interplay of sound, noise, performance and river landscapes. Layering archival footage with new material shot on the Slice of Reality (Richard Wilson), the film offers a new summoning of their experimental and fizzing spirit.

	Directors Reflections&#38;nbsp;Alex EisenbergWith this film we wanted to expand the physical archive of the Bow Gamelan Ensemble, give it new soundings and explode through film. The archive had been stored on the unique sculpture the Slice of Reality (by Richard Wilson) a huge cross section of a ship located in the River Thames. So much of BGE’s work was located in and around the river and we worked to draw new lines and flows in and out of watery landscapes, finding ways for the archive to emerge between rust and cracks and creeks.&#38;nbsp; 
The challenge of this film was to infuse the monumental scale and spectacle of BGE into 20 mins. The film was a process of layering, finding new connections and other possibilities that could be mapped and fired up through a re-engagement with the archival documents now - video, photos, posters, drawings and conviviality over flaming Sambucca on the ships bridge! The past seeping its way into the present - slightly inebriated. This backwards/forward sort of way of working. A way of recycling memories and energies, especially the risky, uncontained and immense ones&#38;nbsp; - so that we might absorb some essence of them now and into the future. Because we need this in what can sometimes feel like a stifling moment to live. 
Thanks to the possibility of that time of the 80s’, to all those who made BGE happen and to the few people who had the nouse to make some recordings never mind how shaky and seemingly impossible it was to capture such enthralling moments. Thank you to Anne, Richard and Paul for all that you conjured! I feel very grateful for the contact I’ve had with the work.

	💥️The Light of Day

Short Film, 2020
with Anne Bean and Jeanette Iljon
A series of tender exchanges between life long friends Jeanette Iljon and Anne Bean. Born eleven days apart in Zambia in 1950, they both went on to become artists in the UK in the early 1970s. The Light of Day carefully recomposes Iljon’s avant-garde, feminist and social activist film works made in the 1970s/80s. It combines these with an almost lost interview, shot by Anne Bean in 2000, and new performance material that was made collaboratively with Alex Eisenberg in 2019 following Iljon’s diagnosis with dementia.

The Rimmers are a family from north London. Gluttonous mother Gaye (Alex Eisenberg), nebbishy father Mervyn (Tom Joseph) and their behaviourally-challenged 12 year old Becky (Candy Gigi) shamelessly put their Jewishness out in the open using audacious public interventions, drag, toilet humour and fishballs. Since 2016 they have hosted the queer Jewish club night Buttmitzvah in London and New York. In 2019 they made their first short film Personal Shopping.Personal Shopping - Short FilmDir. Self shot in public using an iPhone, Personal Shopping follows Jewish Princess Becky’s search for the perfect dress for her Bat Mitzvah. Parents Mervyn and Gaye try to manage the situation with the personal shopping assistant who has to deal with this grotesque family. This outlandish, improvised film shamelessly presents a queer version of a Jewish family from North West London. 2019Premiered at Berlinale, Berlin, Germany 2022&#38;nbsp;
WHITE SANDS CRYSTAL FOXES is Liz Rosenfeld's new experimental cinema work created for a 360° immersive experience. Alex worked with Liz to animate and edit the material and digitally stage it for the planetarium setting at the Zeiss-Großplanetarium Berlin.
The work approaches questions regarding queer sexuality in the face of the degeneration of nature and sustainable resources. Rosenfeld situates an audience within a cruising fallout shelter, where they are taken on a journey of the future of flesh, holes, crystals and foxes. When humans have failed the future of ecological resources and environmental survival, what happens when all are they are left with is themselves? Starring performer Phoebe Patey-Ferguson.

Edge of an Era revisited a specific series of seminal performance art events from the late 1980s, through artistic commissions, archival digitisation, workshops in London and Cumbria and a public event celebrating the 30th anniversary of EDGE88.
About the Project

In the late 1980s, Performance Magazine (1979-1992) started presenting some of the first site specific performance art events in the UK, including Art in Danger, At the Edge and Last Sweat of Youth at the Diorama and Air Gallery. This culminated in EDGE 88, one of London’s first site-specific performance/installation festivals which was attended by artists such as Helena Goldwater, who was at the start of her career. Thirty years later, Helena Goldwater and Rob La Frenais, (former editor of Performance Magazine and Director of EDGE 88) in collaboration with the Live Art Development Agency (LADA) are revisiting this and other 1980s performance art events, connecting influential artists from the 1980s with current generations.

The project will shed light on underrepresented&#38;nbsp; histories which have had a significant influence on current art practice and will respond to the current embrace of performance art in the mainstream.

Activities&#38;nbsp;- Five new commissions were created by contemporary artists, following an open call. These new works responded to archival material from the original EDGE events. The commissions have been presented online, drawing connections between the 1980s and now.
- A public event which was held at St John’s Church in Clerkenwell, London (original EDGE 88 location) showcased the commissions and featured artists talks.
- A new online archive of digitised material from: EDGE 88/89; Art in Danger (85-86), At the Edge (87), Last Sweat of Youth (88); and The Last Weekend (89) at Allenheads.
- Two public workshops at the Live Art Development Agency Study Room in London and Allenheads Contemporary Arts in Hexham.
- A new website featuring the commissions, interviews and selected digitised video materials.

‘Backwards Forwards’ is a video made by Alex Eisenberg and Anne Bean from a live performance called 'Post Reality: Laws of Similarity and Contagion'. The original performance was commissioned to launch ‘Performance Magazine Online’ at the ReROOTed Festival, Humber Street Gallery, Hull in March 2017. It featured live appearances by Rob La Frenais, Richard Wilson and Yol.

Performance Magazine Online (2017) is a project by Rob La Frenais and Alex Eisenberg in collaboration with Live Art Development Agency. In partnership with Re-ROOTed, Hull City of Culture 2017 and The British Library, London. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

With its maverick and punk ethos Performance Magazine embodied an immensely active community of artists, writers and publics that crossed disciplines throughout the late 70s, 80s and the start of the 90s.
The magazine provided a vital platform for the awareness of new approaches to the making and experience of art by creating a critical context and space for discourse. Moving beyond Performance Art and conventional categorisation
	
	
Performance Magazine was instrumental in promoting cross-disciplinary and underground art and played an important role in triggering the development of Live Art as a terminology and field of creative practice.
Rob La Frenais (founding editor 1979 – 1987) collaborated with Live Art Development Agency (LADA) and Alex Eisenberg to develop the project – Performance Magazine Online.
All sixty-six ISSUES of Performance Magazine have been digitised and are accessible on this site for you to freely search, browse and read. A new FILM (below) by Hugo Glendinning and Alex Eisenberg maps the magazine’s history and legacy Commissioned FEATURES by Anne Bean, Hester Reeve, Lynn MacRitchie, Diana Damian Martin, Claire MacDonald and Nahum Mantra respond to the archive and the period when the magazine was published.

Launch events in Hull and London
Performance Magazine Online was launched with two public events: in Hull on 25 March 2017, as part of the Re-ROOTed Festival and at the British Library in London on 27 April 2017.&#38;nbsp; LADA also hosted a STUDY DAY and workshop with Something Other (Mary Paterson, Maddy Costa and Diana Damian) looking at Live Art, writing and digital publishing on 25 April 2017.

During his time at LADA Alex curated LADA Screens - an online screening platform for screen based work by artists who make performance. The programme featured seminal performance documentation, works to camera, short films/video and archival footage. Each film was made available for free online for a limited period and was launched with a live event at LADA’s space featuring presentation and conversion with artists and filmmakers. Alongside the LADA team Alex worked on screenings with artists including: Narcissister, Kembra Pfhaler, Tehching Hsieh, Oreet Ashery, Marcia Farquhar, Katherine Araniellio, Morgan Quaintance, Adam Patterson, Liz Rosenfeld and many others. 
LADA Screens continues as a platform for presenting artists work.
